Dump Truck Load Calculator
Enter the size of the area and the material. We will estimate the cubic yards, tons and number of truckloads you need.
Estimate your load
Estimates only. Material weights vary by source and moisture, and legal truck payloads vary by truck and route. We confirm quantities and loads on every quote.
How the math works
Cubic yards
Length × width × depth, converted to cubic feet and divided by 27.
Tons
Cubic yards × the typical weight of the material per yard.
Truckloads
Whichever runs out first: the truck’s volume or its legal weight.

Common questions
How many cubic yards are in a dump truck?
It depends on the truck. As a rough guide, a tandem-axle carries about 12 tons, a tri-axle about 15, a quad-axle 18 to 19, a quint-axle about 22 and a six-axle centipede 24 to 26. By volume that is roughly 12 to 22 cubic yards. Virginia also offers a 5% overload permit, which lets a permitted truck carry about 5% more on eligible routes. These are general figures, and individual trucks vary. Heavy materials like stone reach the legal weight limit before the bed is full.
How many tons of stone do I need?
Multiply length by width by depth in feet, divide by 27 to get cubic yards, then multiply by about 1.4 tons per yard for #57 stone or 1.5 for crusher run. The calculator above does the math for you.
