Nothing grows where it shouldn’t

Ives Contracting keeps industrial and utility sites free of vegetation across all of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Weeds in a substation, switchyard or solar array are more than a looks problem. They create fire risk, hide hazards, hold moisture against equipment and block access and inspection. Utilities including Dominion Energy have trusted Ives with vegetation work since 2017.

Bare-ground work is done by licensed applicators who are Ives employees, not subcontracted spray crews. Every application is recorded and kept on file for three years, as state regulations require, and we follow each owner’s site-access and safety requirements.

Most sites need a residual pre-emergent treatment to stop new growth plus a follow-up visit to catch anything that breaks through. We schedule both as one annual program, so the site stays clear all season. Pair it with our right-of-way and fencing work for one crew on the whole property.

Sites we keep clear

Substations & switchyards

Gravel yards kept bare so crews can move safely and equipment stays clear of growth.

Solar & battery storage

Array perimeters, inverter and battery pads, access roads and fence lines.

Fence lines

Weed-free strips along security and perimeter fencing so growth never climbs the fabric.

Gravel yards & laydown areas

Storage yards, equipment lots and staging areas held free of weeds all season.

Pipeline & pump stations

Station yards, valve sites and meter sets kept clear for access and inspection.

Selective herbicide

How an annual program works

  • Site walk to map treated areas, sensitive edges and access rules
  • Residual pre-emergent treatment timed to stop the season’s growth
  • Follow-up visit to treat anything that breaks through
  • Treatment matched to the surface, soil and what sits next to it
  • One annual price per site, so budgets are set up front

Common questions

What is industrial vegetation management?

It is keeping industrial and utility sites free of weeds and brush, usually with bare-ground herbicide programs. Ives provides it for substations, solar and battery storage sites, fence lines, gravel yards and pipeline stations across Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.

What is bare-ground weed control?

A residual herbicide program that keeps a surface free of all vegetation, not just certain weeds. It is used where nothing should grow, such as substation gravel, fence lines and equipment pads.

How often does a site need to be treated?

Most sites need one residual treatment a year plus a follow-up visit to catch breakthrough growth. We set both up as a single annual program.

Are your applicators licensed?

Yes. All herbicide work is done by licensed applicators who are Ives employees, not subcontractors. Every application is recorded and kept on file for three years, as state regulations require.

Do you work for utilities?

Yes. Ives has provided vegetation work for utilities, including Dominion Energy, since 2017. We are also a Virginia DBE and SWaM certified, SBA woman-owned small business, which helps utilities and agencies meet supplier diversity goals.
